I think Swin Cash is going to be an interesting one. I'm watching the Su-perBowl and the Giants have a really good shot to be the Patriots.

I read on wnba.com that Detroit cored Swin Cash and expects to trade her within the next two weeks. The posters on stormfans.org think that the Storm are going to trade the #4 pick in the draft to Detroit either for Swin Cash or for a package involving Swin Cash and either another pick or another player.
I REALLY hope Seattle keeps the #4 pick. Whether they draft Candace Wiggins or they draft Erlana Larkins...Seattle will be better for keeping the pick (and throwing some $$$ at a couple of free agents).

Seattle could use Swin, but they better get something else. PeeWee maybe?
Swin for the #4 is horribly balanced.

Report: Storm nabs two-time All-Star Cash
| Speculation about this trade abounds in various message boards online, with two likely scenarios being most-discussed: Cash and Detroit's second-round pick (No. 18) for the No. 4 pick; or, Cash for future Storm draft picks (in 2009 and beyond). |
By the way, I'm hearing this trade won't be the biggest we'll see this offseason.

| Katie Douglas, the Connecticut Sun’s All-Star guard, will be dealt to the Indiana Fever on Tuesday for forward Tamika Whitmore and Indiana’s 2008 first round draft pick (12th overall), according to league sources. Another Indiana player may also be involved in the deal. |

WOW!!! I'm surprised she requested the trade because her family got heckled by the Fever fans during the playoffs (and it was said that Douglas was NOT HAPPY about that).
It's going to be an interesting day. I'm waiting to see what Seattle does today. I'm REALLY hoping they don't trade the #4 pick (they could REALLY use Candace Wiggins or Erlana Larkins up there...even drafting Alexis Hornbuckle would be better than trading the pick).

| "I am excited to be joining the Minnesota Lynx organization, and I hope to have the opportunity to finish my career here, just a few hours away from my hometown," DeForge said. "I am looking forward to working with Coach Zierden, as well as another opportunity to work with Coach Julie Plank again here with the Lynx after two seasons of learning from her in Indiana. I cannot wait to get on the court with our young talent as we strive to return the Lynx to the playoffs for the first time since 2004. The goal for me every season is to win a WNBA Championship, and I am coming to the Lynx to help bring the trophy home to Minnesota." |

Well maybe the Storm wanna contend for a championship now and not later with sue and jackson in there prime, instead of waiting two years if they draft a rookie. If your the Storm your bringing in a tough defensive minded vet with cahmpionship experience who can knock down the mid range j. I still think the shock got the best deal but its not complelty stupid....

There's a rumor going around that Sales might be on her way out, too.
http://www.norwichbulletin.com/sports/x2052197138 - http://www.norwichbulletin.com/sports/x2052197138
When asked of Sales, who is the team’s only remaining unrestricted free agent and “core” player, Thibault sounded doubtful the veteran would also return. The former UConn star didn’t take part in postseason exit interviews for the first time, and has continually referred Thibault and Sienko to her agent, Jim Tanner.
“And I know she has talked to other players in the league about playing with other teams,” Thibault said. “My sense is she may not want to be here and the question is whether we should move on.” |

Sales missed a LOT of time last year due to injuries. If they lose her, though, that'll make three starters (Douglas, Dydek, & Sales) and one key backup (DeSouza) that they've lost from last season. This BIG TIME looks like a rebuilding year for the Sun.

Keep in mind, the Sun get Phillips and Gruda. They also get former Duke player Jess Foley in the Douglas trade.
Phillips is a quality player. Foley is a sharp shooter. And Gruda is one of the best players in Europe.
Oh, and they also have two draft picks in the first round. So, all is not lost. But yeah, the Sun will look WAY different next year.

I think it was the right way to go, and about time. The old nucleus wasn't quite good enough to win it all (though they got very close on two occasions).
As for Indiana ... They've not lost much by way of DeForge, since Douglas has just as good a jumpshot. Plus she has an almost complete offensive skillset. Plus she guards better than most in the league. It's scary to think this team will line up with Bevilaqua and Douglas and Catchings. Talk about defense.
I'm not sure Seattle are much better now than they were with Lennox and Castro-Marques ... doesn't bode well for next season's playoff race, which should be harder than the last one because LA will be a factor. Well, maybe Cash will prove me wrong. Part of me hopes she does - so Bill won't have the last laugh.

Does Phoenix's interest in Hoffman tell us anything about the tempo of basketball they hope to play post-Westhead? (I guess Schumacher's no speed demon herself yet she fitted in well enough with Paul ball, so it could still be ultra up-tempo next year.)
Who's in charge there now anyway?

Corey Gaines is taking over. He was their assistant last year and played for Westhead in college. He said they would continue to play the uptempo style, which is why a lot are questioning their move to offer Hoffman.

I don't really understand a lot about how free agency works so hopefully you guys can help me out...
Houston has extended an offer sheet to Jia, right? But the Chicago Sky has the ability to match any offer b/c she's a RFA. Is this something that Jia persued or that she had to agree to? Or can teams just hand out offer sheets to any player...with or without the players consent?
In other words, is Jia trying to get out of Chicago? Does she want to play for Houston? Or is this just how things normally work with regards to RFA's?

This has nothing to do with Jia. The powers are in the teams hands. Teams can offer an offer sheet to any RFA, hoping that their teams can't match their offer. Basically, it's whoever has the money and our money situation should be okay considering Dupree, Raymond, Coggins, Moeggenberg, and Price are still in Rookie contracts. If Chicago matches the offer, there is no way Jia can go to Houston, unless she is signed and traded there. Also, if a team offers someone and can't get them, they can't offer them for at least a year.
Hope that makes sense.

I'm not sure that's the full deal there on offer sheets. Players have to sign the initial offer from the team but their current club gets 5 days to match. So in this case Jia had signed the initial sheet, doesn't mean that she necessarily wanted out of Chicago but she did have to like the offer to get into this situation.

They make good teachers...but they're not going to get Houston to the playoffs. They might still be 2-3 years away from making the playoffs. This sounds like a lot but Tina Thompson is not far at all from retirement.

Well i think with those additions in the Comets i do believe that they will do better than last season and, in my mind thats what i always strive for.

I agree. Mwadi Mabika and PeeWee won't get them to the playoffs but, at the same time, Houston won't be pushed around like last year (remember when the Comets came to visit the Sky in late July or early August...man, you almost have to TRY to be THAT BAD!). Not that I was complaining.

On the other hand. Wow Sales will be sitting out 08 season for the Sun, I highly doubt they will make any noise in the east's playoff picture this year. Well wishes to Sales for a speedy revovery!.

Meh, CT will have less perimeter offense, but they get better in the post with Whitmore and Gruda.

Wow, the Sun have really fallen off...well, hypothetically speaking. I guess I should wait and see how their roster shapes up and how they actually perform before I pronounce them dead...
But seriously, no Sales. No Douglas. No Dydek (I'm not sure about this...correct me if I'm wrong about her). And your only significant addition is Tamika Whitmore? Not good.
Whalen's one of my favorite players so I still got love for the Sun...but I don't expect much out of them. Then again, I'm not really taking into account their myriad of international players, mainly because I know very little about them .

You're forgetting Gruda, who is arguably one of the best Europeans playing today. Last year she won the Euroleagues rookie of the year. She's a quality post who I think will excel in the WNBA. They also get Aussie Erin Phillips back.
Douglas will be missed. The other two - meh. Dydek is old and stiff. Sure, she's 7'2" but she was SLOW last year. Sales hasn't been the same since 2006. Last year she was injured most of the year. The intriguing part is that I think she will continue to play in Europe. This could be a first of the 'Go to Europe, skip the WNBA' routine we may see from some players. I'd be interested to know if it's really about the injury or the money.

A little late, but....
[start Allison Bales fandom] Does the trading of Whitmore open up some minutes for Bales to play? I think either her of Sutton-Brown can play the 5, and the other one could play the 4.[end Allison Bales fandom]

Absolutely, it does. A team doesn't use a #1 pick to draft a 6'-7" player and then let her ride the bench for long. She's probably going to compete for their PF starting slot.

I wouldn't worry too much. When Lauren Jackson negotiated a five-game "break" with Seattle, it was widely expected that Penny Taylor would ask Phoenix for the same thing. Also, the odds were far better that LJ would skip the season than they (the odds, that is) were for Penny Taylor.

I hope you're right! Coach Gaines made a comment around Christmas time when asked about Penny being signed....'Oh its a team sport ...bla bla bla...we'll win with or without her'. And I was like, 'DUDE--get freakin real--we aren't talking about ole whtzhername at the end of the bench that never takes her warm ups off--we're talkin Penny Freakin Taylor'.
I hope she's back--for her game and because her husband is HOT!

Hmmm...after watching Nykesha Sales play big minutes in the Euroleague All-Star game, I'm starting to believe that bullsky was right in saying that she's just skipping the WNBA to focus on big money overseas. Nothing wrong with that per se, just wish she'd come out and say that instead of using the 'I'm injured' excuse...especially while she's in the midst of playing in meaningless allstar games overseas!
Oh, and I sure hope the Whitmore trade opens up more minutes for Bales. I'm looking for Bales and Latta to have breakout years in '08...

It seems as if Connecticut has already thrown in the towel on this season so they're getting their hands on as many UConn girls as they can so they can sell tickets (because they traded for Barbara Turner earlier). That's what it seems like anyway.
The 2009 lottery won't be a bad one to get into: Angel McCoughtry, Courtney Paris, Kristi Toliver, Abby Waner, Devanei Hampton, Ashley Walker, Rashanda McCants, etc. Good strategy on the Sun's part actually.

I don't know. With all the new faces, they're gonna need half the season just to get to know each other (especially with them losing three starters in Douglas, Dydek, and Sales).
I think they're competing for Angel McCoughtry myself.

The writing was on the wall when Washington signed Amber Jacobs to the offer sheet. The Mystics knew there wasn't much of a chance that Minnesota would fight to keep her given their depth at guard (Augustus, Harding, Quinn, & DeForge...all ahead of her on the depth chart).
